Whether you are a novice or experienced walker, our courses will give you the skills you need to step out with confidence and enhance your enjoyment of the countryside and the mountains. From route planning and weather forecasts to detailed map work, our navigation skills courses give you the skills you need for the outdoors.



Navigation for Beginners


A 1 day course for beginners who want to be able to use a map confidently in the countryside and follow paths and other linear features.

All our courses take place in the Lake District (Keswick area). The course will adapt according to the prevailing conditions to make the best of any weather.

Navigation for Beginners – WHAT'S COVERED?

  • Understand how to use map symbols and scales, on a variety of maps.
  • Take a 6 figure grid reference for any given position and also locate such a reference on the map.
  • Orientate the map with and without a compass.
  • Use the orientated map to identify land features and indicate direction of travel.
  • Choose simple navigation strategies and routes.
  • Estimate how long a walk will take using the map.
  • What are contours and how steep is the land
  • Plan a safe, suitable walk
  • Understand access rights and responsibilities inc the Countryside Code.

Equipment
Specialist equipment such as group shelter and large first aid kit wil be supplied by your guide. Please download Kit List for the required personal equipment.

Fitness
We will be out on the hill all day, but the pace of the day is relaxed and there'll be plenty of breaks!. If you would like any advice as to how fit you need to be please get in contact for some advice.

Ratio
This course is run on a maximum ratio of 1 guide to every 6 clients.

Cost
Navigation for beginners course costs £50 per person.

Navigation Skills


This 2 day course is for anyone who ventures out into the hills, but is not confident in their ability to reliably navigate in poor conditions. You should have a basic knowledge of map reading, including following linear features and basic use of compass.

All our courses take place in the Lake District (Keswick area). The course will adapt according to the prevailing conditions to make the best of any weather.

Navigation Skills – WHAT'S COVERED?

  • Orientation of the map
  • Symbols and scales
  • Grid references
  • Ground shape and contours
  • Strategies for finding a feature (micro navigation)
  • Identifying the mountains and ridges all around
  • Pacing and timing distances
  • Measuring and walking on a bearing
  • Relocation strategies (how to find where you are if you get lost)
